This paper reports on the experimental demonstration of extended stability and sub-diffraction-limited super-resolution imaging with nanoparticles on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals. We employed a micro-structure polymer film (PS) to induce a periodic structure onto a glass substrate. By using a gold nanoparticle (GNP) solution as a sensing medium, the immobilized GNP arrays showed greater stability against shear, stretch, bending and UV radiation than the uncoated GNP solution. The super-resolution imaging results demonstrated that the periodic arrays of GNP can provide sub-diffraction-limited super-resolution imaging, confirming the excellent super-resolution properties of 2D photonic crystals. The response time was within several seconds, which was much faster than that of many other techniques. The strength of the technique demonstrated here is that it is simple and cost-effective for the fabrication of the substrate and the time required to prepare the GNP solution is short.
